There are but a few names that come to mind when thinking of the greatest rock drummers of all time. Tommy Lee has earned his place in the pantheon of great rock musicians. He has not only influenced some of today's hottest players but he continues to be a creative force whether composing, recording and producing his own material or writing a New York Times best selling autobiography or starring in his own television show. Tommy is a mega-star in the truest sense of the word.Born Thomas Lee Bass on October 3rd, 1962 in Athens Greece, Tommy grew up in Southern California where his family had settled shortly thereafter. He played drums from a very early age and participated in his High School Marching band.Tommy's first rock band was a band called "Suite 19". In 1980, Tommy formed Motley Crue with Nikki Sixx, Vince Neil and Mick Mars. Following their signing with Elektra, the band went on to achieve multi-platinum status with it's releases" Too Fast For Love", "Shout At The Devil", "Theater Of Pain","Girls, Girls, Girls" and, "Dr. Feelgood". Tommy's dynamic stage performances and presence quickly took on a legendary status.
A hiatus from the Crue in the late 90's allowed Tommy to work on a solo recording project entitled "Methods of Mayhem." The self- titled album was released in 1999 featured Tommy on lead vocals, guitar and drums. The release was supported by a tour in which Tommy was notably backed by Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins.
In 2002, Tommy released his second solo effort entitled "Never A Dull Moment" which scored a hit single with "Hold Me Down" The following tour was highlighted by a series of mainstage appearances on the Ozzfest Tour later that year.
2004 saw the release of his autobiography, "Tommyland", he filmed the reality show, "Tommy Lee Goes to College" and Tommy and his mates from Motley Crue announced their long awaited reunion tour coinciding with the release of a 2 disc Greatest Hits collection featuring three new songs. Motley Crue launched 3 successful tours behind "Red, White and Crue", and released a live DVD called Carnival of Sin: Live.
In 2005, Lee released his 3rd solo record entitled, "Tommyland: The Ride" which featured the hit, "Good Times". Tommy also played drums on Jack Mannequin's record, "Everything in Transit".
Rockstar Supernova debuted in 2006 featuring Tommy, Jason Newsted(ex-Metallica bassist) and Gilby Clarke(ex-Guns N Roses guitarist). They found singer Lukas Rossi through the CBS reality show "Rockstar." They released their self-titled debut cd in November of 2006 and toured in 2007.
2008 saw the release of a new Motley Crue cd, "Saints of Los Angeles" as well as a new summer tour, "Crue Fest". Lee also has new reality show on the Discovery Channel called "Battleground Earth" with rapper Ludacris that will focus on environmental changes.
Tommy and DJ Aero also create electronic dance music together under the name, Electro Mayhem, and have played all around the world since 2000. They released some original compositions through Beatport.com in April of 2008.
After Motley Crue plays the 2010 Ozzfest, Methods of Mayhem will release their new CD, "A Public Disservice Announcement", which saw Tommy recording with people around the world.
Tommy Lee plays a mixture Zildjian cast cymbals including models from the Z3, K Custom and A Custom ranges and effects such as the large Zil-bel.
